{let freedom ring} | decatur, alabama | family photographer

Yesterday my family and I attended the Celebrate America event at Southside Baptist Church  here in Decatur. We’d been before and we’re very excited for this year’s production because it’s always so good. The show is a salute to America and those people who have given up so much to give us the freedoms that we take advantage of today. It’s a musical extravaganza that keeps you on your feet and entertained. About half way through the show the orchestra and choir begins to perform the songs for each branch of the military. As the crowd stands and chimes in, men and women who have served begin walking to the front to represent their branches. The tears begin to fall. I try choking them back, it’s impossible. To see these men who are struggling to stand, crippled by age, helping each other walk to the front of that sanctuary with pride beaming in their faces makes me so proud to be an American. Each song brings about more tears, then there is the Marines’ Hymn , “From the Halls of Montezuma…” That’s all it took. Five little words and I’m in an all out sob. It’s because of those two graduations I attended at Paris Island many years ago, seeingmy two cousins graduate from the Marine Corp and hearing the Marine Band and those soldiers sing those words, it’s gut wrenching. Finally, the teary icing on the cake… Taps. Oh, the pain. Thinking of the mamas and daddys who have had to sit through so many services hearing those solemn notes, knowing their child gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. My head dropped and it was over for me. I was overcome with emotions. We take so much for granted in this country. I am so blessed and thankful for all those who serve. The end of the show was filled with streamers, confetti and a pride that was felt throughout. Thank you Southside for such an amazing production, year after year!

Most of all thank you to the men and women who serve. To those who are left at home keeping their family afloat and to those who have paid the ultimate price. Thank you thank you thank you. And to those who have made an impact on my life… Seth, Brian, Wesley, Iris, Pappaw Bill, Barry… I thank you a million times over.

xoxo – jamie
